<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Made It #1 - Reading Strategy Binders

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"> Have you been on ReadWorks.org? Have you had time to look around and see what is all out there. It has become an all time favorite website of mine in the last 2 years. It has so much, how am I suppose to remember what is there, what is available, that is without getting lost and side tracked with everything else. I don't know about you, but I am very much a weekend planner for lessons, and then I might need something (books to go with lessons) and not have it ahead of time. So I created Reading Strategy Binders.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">I started this project last year, but didn't get very far. So this year, I had to revamp and make things cute. I started off by creating Binder Covers. You can see 3 of the covers (on the floor). Here is a close up of one. There is a total of 2o Skills/Strategies I have done this with. *I also made spine labels for 1" binders.

The next step in the process was to type up what each strategy has in terms of lessons and how they connect to the Texas State Standards (Sorry, Common Core Folk, Texas hasn't gotten there yet, but you can look up the Common Core Standards that match each lesson). You will see based on the picture I did it for all Grades K -6. Why you ask, well since I have taught Pre-K, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th, it made sense to have the information for remediation or extension available with out a huge search.

After this, I have started the long process of printing off all the lessons, with there plans and worksheets that go with them. I also printed off the reading passages for 2nd-6th grade that go with the strategy. Yes, they have reading passages to match. For instance if I need a 3rd Grade Character Passage I can find it with 5 questions, 3 of which address character questions. I put those in the binders by grade and all the lessons in grade order on top.

So if this is something that you would like, and don't want to do all the work, shoot me an e-mail and I will e-mail you the drop box link to the binder covers, spines, and the lesson breakdowns.
This weekend I went to another stitch weekend sponsored by The Silver Needle out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This year they had the ladies from Just Another Button Company and I got to learn how to make buttons. Let me tell you, clay buttons are a time consuming task and I now fully understand why they cost about $3-4 a piece. We had to take 3 colors of blue blend to make 6 colors, then form a cane (tube) with some other colors and after about 2 hours and 3 other people we got this. Blue Flower Canes, can you see it.

After this, each cane was baked for 15 minutes to form flat buttons, sliced, and baked again for another 15 minutes. Once they were done baking and cooling, one of the ladies drilled two holes in them to create the button. With over 150 ladies there, we were able to make a ton of buttons with some variety, as each cane you see there made about 20-25 buttons. Here are some of the buttons after they were done, along with the variety of the other ones that were made. This was a fun projects.

In case you can't tell, those are pink, yellow, and blue flowers, leaves, 2 acorns, and a pumpkin. Those were just the ones that I got that were baked. I have about 4 times that many that only got through one baking cycle.
Yes, we all try to decorate our classrooms and make them unique in their own way, but come on - we all know that decorations only hold a kids attention for a certain period of time, and then what does? What makes your class stand out? What makes kids want to come to your room to learn? What makes your class the one all parents want their child in? Are you the Oddball of classes?

These are questions that Dave asks and want us to consider. Do we really want to be the same boring class that most kids are going to? Why are kids not excited about school anymore? I was when I was a kid. Maybe it is because we have more to compete with. Video Games, Computers, Ipads, Etc. So what creative things are we going to do to bring their attention and engagement in?

Here is a couple of questions Dave asks us to ponder:

1) If your students didn't have to be there, would you be teaching an empty room?
- Yep, would they be there if they didn't have too?

2) Do you have any lessons you could sell tickets for?
- Do you have lessons that are so cool everyone wants to come and now you have limited space?

So how do we do this? How do we create these classrooms?
According to Dave - mix lessons with entertainment - yep, you heard that right.

Positioning - Why should students listen to us? Believe me, because their parents made them. or because the principal says to, or because they have low grades means diddly squat to a student at my school (at least most of them). What is in it for them? That is what we have to figure out. Again, it could be different for each group or each student, and yes we have to serve and meet all their needs.

Reframing - So not only do we have to position ourselves as a person who should be listened to, but we have to reframe our content to have purpose in a students life. I know as a teacher when I have had students hit the point where they are transitioning from picture books to chapter books, the desire to read takes a tremendous drop. Why, my guess, they have to now visualize what is going on by themselves instead of having a picture to do it for them. So Why read chapter books? How do we go about reframing the students mind to help them understand what reading chapter books can do for them.

So Dave gives a great example in his book on page 63 of his son using quarters to get something out of a "bubble - gum" machine. The child's friends had gotten a dinosaur and dragon tattoo, and he son pulled out a bracelet with hearts on it. Devastating for a little boy who's friends got all this cool stuff, but the minute his dad (Dave) called it Pirates Treasure, all was good. He reframed the bracelet from being a silly girly thing to being cool pirates treasure.

How can you reframe some of your lessons to be more like pirates treasure and less like a girly braclet?

Dave asks "are you asking the right questions" or "are you waiting for the idea to drop into your lap?"

ARE YOU TUNED INTO THE CREATIVITY CHANNEL
ON YOUR BRAIN RADIO?

We are taught in training to become a teacher to ask open ended questions so we get good answers, but are we asking ourselves questions about our lesson plans in a positive open ended way or a negative - only one answer way?

Examples (I came up with these myself off of Dave's Examples)

Positive Negative
How can I add manipulatives to this lesson? Is there a way to add manipulatives to this lesson?
How can I word this to make it intresting? Can I change this to make it intresting?

Have you ever had to attend a workshop about something that you are going to be "required" to implement in your classroom? If you are like me, panic sets in. How am I going to do this on top of everything else? Why should I change what I'm doing if it is already working? Then you get to the workshop, listen and participate in activities, and go "I'm already doing this" it is like _____________. (Fill in the blank) Why - because all the sudden what we had been doing becomes more important and we are tuned into it. Just like if you start working on more creative ideas in your classroom, you will see more creative ideas around you.

Hello - You mean as we practice it, it will become easier? YEP - same thing we teach our students.

6 Words - So 6 Words is a story Dave tells. It is about a lady who says "It is easy for you. You're creative." Dave goes onto explain that 1 - he doesn't feel it was easy, he spent 16 years brainstorming and coming up with ideas and 2 - the lady essentiallly just said she wasn't creative.
How many times do we think the same way? How many times do we hear from a student "I can't" or "but ____________ is so smart, it is easy for them?" Are we taking the easy way out? Are we letting our students have an excuse? Maybe it is time for us (okay me) to stop making excuses and to start putting that little effort in and ask the right questions. I need to tune into my creativity radio station.

The Real Law of Attraction - In order to get what you want, you must decide what that is an WORK for it. Yep, you must try to get it. "Ideas are great, but implementation is the key." (pg 44)
As I read this section, all I could think of was all the times I came up with or liked an idea, and then didn't follow through or said "but my class couldn't do that ". Maybe it is time I implemented more, and tried.

Designing a System to Capture Ideas - Do you have a way to record your ideas as they come? Do you have a way to write down that amazing idea? Dave says we must, because I'll do it later, means it won't happen. I don't know about you, but I keep my phone with me at all times. I pretty sure we all have a way of taking a note or two on that.

Make It Easy - Keep things simple, make it easy to record ideas and write them down

Failure vs Feedback - So all this is great, but what happens when things don't go right? Have I failed? According to Dave we can look at it that way or we can look at it as feedback. What were the students telling me about the lesson that wasn't engaging? I don't know about you, but who says every class has to be taught the same? Sometimes each class finds different things engaging. No biggie, it is the same objectives, right? When those students are chatty instead of engaged, maybe the feedback is "Hello, we are bored". Look for the feedback, not the success or failure.

Creative Alchemy - Use your outside interests to find creative ways to do things in your classroom. Bring your loves in. It may not come immediately, but keep trying.
I just got my book in the mail Tuesday, and I am just now getting to Chapter 3. Forgive me, but there will be at least 4 posts today on Teach Like a Pirate.

I'm in the Ship and ready to go. I must get caught up.

Here we go!!!

Engagement - Why is it one year a lesson works great, the students are engaged, and grasping the concept and the next year, they aren't? My lesson didn't change? My way of implementing the lesson didn't change? The concept to be taught didn't change? What changed, THE STUDENTS!!!! What works for one group, might not work for another group. So how do we make it so the next years group stays engaged? HELLO - FIND OUT WHAT THEY LIKE!!! Sorry, all caps has to do with I just hit myself in the forehead and went DUH!!! That is where Rapport comes in. What isn't that helps this group of students to be engaged?

You mean that I must learn what each student likes, and get to know them? YEP!! So as I'm reading, I'm thinking about all those interest surveys I have seen. Maybe I should use those, but that would be more paperwork. That isn't much fun. I don't have time to talk and have a here is what my life is about conversation with each individual student. So how do we do it? How do we build rapport?

CONNECTIONS -
- How did what we read in class connect to your life? Remind you of something?
- Did you hear what happened on the news? Maybe that can lead you to learning something.
- Hello, Writing - I have learned so much from my students through their writing.
- Everything we do on a daily basis, leads us to learn more about each student.

But then aren't we becoming more like friends and not teachers? Doesn't this allow for them to take advantage of us? Not if we model appropriate behavior according do Dave Burgess.

We have all been taught to get procedures taught at the beginning to have a successful classroom. Yea, so - Ive done that and six weeks down the road, I feel like it has been a wasted effort. Why do it? Dave puts it in a great way. "Nothing is more important to me than creating the proper atmosphere right from the start. No content standard matters to me until I have established the safe, supportive, and positive classroom environment I need to successfully teach my students." (Teach Like a Pirate, pg 22)

Light bulb went off - Hello, Procedures are what create the right atmosphere. Now it makes sense, it isn't about the actual procedure, it is about the atmosphere in the classroom it creates where a student can feel safe, supported, and encouraged.

Dave's first few days:

Day One -
- Intro as into a movie theater
- Class is being hosted, not taught
- One rule - NO MEANNESS (it is in all caps in the book too)
- Playdoh activity (yes, he teaches High School and does this, so why can't we)
- Create something that represents you
- Must be school appropriate
- As host, I will ask you a couple questions about the item and your name
- This allows me to go around and have conversations with students.
- Part of building rapport is getting the students to know each others names and who each other is

Day Two -
- Collaborative Group Activity
- 10 Stranded people, and can only save 5
- Sorry fellow readers, but this is one you almost have to read to get. I can't explain it with out rewriting they whole thing.

Day Three -
- Convincing the students they can be successful no matter what their past school experience has been.

Wow, that was a long chapter. All in all, build relationships, they are important.

Now for a brief break, and then for chapter 4.

Hope you are having an amazing weekend.
I'm doing three book studies at once. Hope I can keep up with it all.

Chapter 1 is where we begin. First of all, I love reading book written by teachers who are still in the classroom. They seem so real.

A comment in her introduction, really hit home with me. Donalyn Miller on page 2 says "They (the children) don't read well enough; they don't read often enough; and if you talk to children, they will tell you that they don't see reading as meaningful in their life." What do you mean they don't see it as meaningful, why not? Could it be because it makes them think a little and sitting in front of the TV or computer is easier to do? So how do we change it? I can't wait to find out.

"A trail of worksheets from a teacher to their students does not build a connection with readers, only books do." Powerful quote...how can we expect students to learn to love reading only from practice passages and worksheets?

Okay, so all that above came just from the introduction. Now in to the real chapter one.

I have to admit as I read chapter one, there wasn't really anything that totally struck me as new. As a teacher with 11 years experience teaching a variety of grade levels, every situation seemed familiar to me. The one thing I have noticed and agree with, is as students get older their interest in reading tends to lessen. I haven't figured this one out. Is it because you don't have picture clue and visualizing is harder to do? Is it because you have to infer a little more? Is it because it seems like fewer students have books at home, or are encouraged to read at home?

I am ready for chapter 2 and I hope I can get. Few ahha's out of it. Happy Reading.

Here goes nothing.

So of course, like most books - Chapter 1 starts off with why is vocabulary instruction important. We all know the obvious - so we understand what we are reading, but there is more. One thing that is said in the beginning of the book that really stuck with me was the authors quote from research done by Keith Stanovich (1986) where he hypothesized that "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" because the vocabulary gap often actually widens as students advance through school. Well doesn't this make sense. As our student age, the ones who have the ability to "see the World" do, and get to add that rich vocabulary, while our ones who can't go out and do things, miss that vocabulary and fall further behind. But how are we suppose to fill all those gaps? Why doesn't the definition, picture, use your own word, and put it in a sentence for us work? Why can't they take the word we give them and use them in their writing and conversations? Maybe the same reason spelling words don't work (or at least didn't for me), they memorize them while they have to, but 3 months down the line, can't remember to save their lives. So what now? Where do we go? How do we incorporate?

Here what Research has told them:
1. Some words are more important to teach than others!
- No I'm not talking cuss words (what teacher would want to teach those)
- I'm talking those high frequency words that will be used across all subjects
2. Students have to learn words at more than one level (They need to know them deeply)
3. Students learn words when they experience them multiple times
- Hello!!! Ding Dong!!! The light went on, the door opened. We don't expect our kids to learn
their multiplication facts in one sitting, what is the difference with new words.
4. Asking student to look up words and write definitions from the dictionary DOESN'T HELP!
- WHAT???? WAIT A MINUTE!!!! That is what we have always done, why not.
- Disclaimer - if it is a student friendly dictionary using everyday language, it cold help
- OKAY - I get it now. (Sorry for the commentary, but this is fun)
5. Word Schemas - Can we say Context Clues
- Patterns to connect meanings of words
- Infering word meaning from context clues in a story
6. Students can learn some words through use of wide reading.
- What make them read more......SHHHHH - don't tell my students, but I may have to increase
their homework to include more reading.
- Reading a wide range of books (Vocarious Reading )
7. Students can learn through rich conversations with adults and peers
- Oh No.....You mean I should let the talk more.....If I must. Maybe I should join in on the
conversation to facilitate that rich conversations. "Get in the Pool"
8. Students can learn some words through play
- Play - We don't do that in 6th Grade - maybe playing with words through song and art will be
good.
9. Students can learn SOME words by direct instruction
- Okay everyone, that says SOME, not all.
10. Most students need word - learning strategies to become successful readers.

Now all we have to do is start a Systematic way of Teaching Vocabulary, and I know at least for me, figuring out how to incorporate it in with all the other things I must teach. However, if it will really allow my students to improve their learning, then maybe something else needs to be lessened to focus on Vocabulary instruction. More to come with Chapter 2 and how that Systematic Way of Teaching Vocabulary works - The meat and potatoes.
I had to read off the preview as I am still waiting for my book. With this said I am not sure I got to read all of chapter 2.

Are you on the side of the pool?
I really enjoy Burgess' connection to a swim coach standing by the pool. This probably has something to do with the fact I was a competitive swimmer in the past. I guess the question I really need to ask, is am I the teacher who just tells the kids what to do and sit back and just wait for them to do it. Sometime this can seem like what needs to be done. I don't know about you, but sometimes I wish it was that simple so I could get all my paper work and grading done. However, is this really benefiting the students? Isn't this the time when you feel like they get what you are teaching the least. This also seems to be what causes the kids to say "she goes to fast," or "she doesn't help me." Sometimes I feel like I have to be the coach on the outside because I'm looking for that kid that is trying to pull another kid under, those behavior friends we have?

Are you in the pool?
Are you the teacher who is in the pool? Are you doing one on one conferences? Are you doing small groups? Are you going to those students and showing them the small things that make them just a little bit more successful? I believe we all start off wanting to be this teacher. The one who is in the middle of it all. The one who has a class of complete engagement with the students totally focused on what is going on. How many students need us to be totally immersed in what we are doing because it may be the only time during the day that someone shows them they are cared about?

Is it fair for us to grade a child based on the sidelines (papers only) or should we grade them based on their growth, thinking, and effort (discussion, responses). I know last year I was bad about grading from the sidelines. I felt like I had to have that paper. How was that fair to my ELL Learners and my students with learning disabilities? Just because they read the question and interpreted it differently or could truly explain there thoughts in written words, doesn't mean they don't have all the material. Maybe if I would immerse myself in my teaching, I would find a few thing to be true:
1. I would have more engagement
2. I would know who was truly struggling and who wasn't and needed to be challenged
3. I would have more fun, and so would my students
4. My students would feel like their teacher cared.

Till Sunday with Chapter 3. May your week be blessed with fun and immersion in what ever you may be doing.

So as I started reading this book, one of the first things I came across in the introduction was:

"Pirates are daring, adventurous, and willing to set forth into uncharted territories with no guarantee of success."

- That describes any teacher at any building with any class. Here comes this new crew of kids, and we are going to try to incorporate new learning and new material into their brains, with the hope of them taking this knowledge and showing their mastery in an assessment of some sort. Can we guarantee each child's success, no! We don't control their home life, their social life, or what they may face outside the school day. We can only control what we teach and pray that it is enough to lead them to success.

PASSION -
Question 1 - What are you passionate about in your teaching? - Me, I am passionate about helping those students who are struggling with reading find the one thing that makes reading a joy instead of a chore. If I had all the money in the world, I would be volunteering at low academic achieving, low income schools and helping those students who need that extra care that is almost impossible to give during a busy school day.
Question 2 - What ignites a fire inside you? - This past year I had a sixth grader who came to me from another country and due to language couldn't even tell me his colors or shapes. The joy, the my "heart grew three times bigger that day" (How the Grinch stole Christmas), that I felt is what ignites me. To see the growth, the passion, the light bulb in my students when they begin to succeed is what makes me want to continue my passion as a teacher.
Question 3 - What is your personal passion? - I'm not sure I would call it a passion, but my stitching. Can it be considered a passion if you never seem to find the time to do it? Is that right?
It has been a long crazy year. 75+ sixth graders, 177 teaching days, 2 STAAR tests, too many Curriculum Assessments to count, 3 Field Trips, packing up a classroom, and I can say I survived the 2012-2013 school year. Some days I wondered if I would, let me tell you , this crew kept me on my toes, and wore me out on a daily basis.

I have to say the ending to this year was bitter sweet. I really enjoy the school I am at, but evidently God has other plans for me right now. Due to a new school being built in the area, I have lost my current position at my campus and have been added to the "surplus" list. Meaning, I have a job next year with my district, but where, what grade, what subject(s), only the lord knows his plan for that right now. I also have applied to other districts here in the DFW metroplex, actually been applying since January, and still haven't heard anything. This is a tough situation for me, but I know come the end of the summer I will be where God wants me and needs me.

Now on to some fun things: MONDAY MADE ITS - Well okay, things I made/used through out the year, that I will be recreating for my next class, no matter what age/grade/subject. Kinda hard to make new things when you don't know where you will be. Would love ideas on something that can be versatile in any classroom.

You may remember me blogging about making these bookbags last year. 2 Gallon Ziplock bags with Duck Tape on all edges. Well let me tell you, they stood up GREAT! No torn sides, no broken bags, no "my bag ripped", or "I can't find mine." They were wonderful. I had 3 big bins that these were stored in based on class. It was wonderful to be able to have the kids move their bins with them to homeroom during district or state testing and know they all had books. Why didn't I just save them for next year you ask? Well, they were in such good shape at the end of the year, I decided it would be a great collection method for all their journals. So, I stacked them all up, gave them to the first block teacher for each class, and journal adding we did. What did we fit in them, Here is the list:

So behind the Crisis Plan, I put each students information (I use a copy of the enrollment card) in a plastic sleeve. Here is what I have found so beneficial. Every time I send something home that requires a phone number (Field Trip form, etc) I put in behind the enrollment form upside down so I can see it if I flip the plastic sleeve to the left side of the binder. I always have a most up to date phone number.

This binder comes in handy for many things -
1. Fire Alarm Rings/ Crisis Situation - One student grabs the hot pink binder and off we
go. It is definitely hard to miss on my shelf.
2. Great to leave out with a sub, she can have a student call a parent if needed or look up a
number for the nurse as well.
3. Field Trips - YES!!! I take the whole binder on a field trip. It allows me to have all my
forms and numbers and it isn't just a stack of papers that get bent up and messed up.
You will notice the red, blue, and green tabs on the right. These designated which class each kid was in. (They are the post it tabs and I wrote their names on them.) My binder itself is in alphabetical order, but the tabs help me know which class each student is in. The top page for each student has up to date data from years past, as well as spots to add data from the current year. Behind each tab, I might add reflection pages my student write after tests, monitoring notes on each child, or writing samples that I feel need to be kept. This binder allows me to have all my data in one spot, and all things for one student to share with them or their parents in one spot. Here are some close ups with more details.
My life has been crazy since I went back to work on the 20th of August.

In my personal life, My divorce became final on the 24th of August and that was a big relief to get it done and over with. I rented a new place, going from a two bedroom town home to a 3 bedroom house with a yard. This was much needed, since me, my two children, two dogs, and bird where in a 900 square foot town home with out a yard.

So with all that it has been 5 weeks of new students, lesson plans, packing, moving, getting furniture, and utilities all ready to go.

With all that in mind, it has been a pretty amazing 5 weeks.

My kids are truly loving their new rooms and the space they have. The dogs have decided that staying outside all day isn't such a bad thing. My wonderful family has helped me get the house completely organized, and in fact, helped me move, have everything put away, and even pictures hung all in one weekend. I couldn't have done it without them. Then my gracious parents bought my kids new bikes this past Monday, and let me tell you, it has been the best thing for my kiddo's. They are loving riding their bikes each night.

Now on to some school stuff.

I am on a team with two other wonderful teachers. Mrs. John teaches Science (she is amazing at it), Mr. Belknap teaches Math (not sure I would have the patience), and I teach Reading, Writing, and Social Studies (World Geography to be exact).

So that means I have 3 blocks a day, each with a time limit of 90 minutes. Yes, you read that right 90 minutes. I am still working on how to get all my curriculum in. Right now, I am trying to do 45 minutes of reading everyday and rotate writing and geography. Let me tell you this has been tough. Now, in the past, I have gotten to geography when I can, and focused on Reading and Writing (my favorites), but this year that isn't an option. They (the district) have decided to add a district mid-year and end of year Geography test on us 6th Graders. YIKES, now that is 3 district reading tests, 2 district writing tests, 2 district geography test, and the 1 BIG STATE READING TEST, and this is only what I have to get covered. Needless to say, I am a bit worried about getting it all covered.

Oh, did I mention that we have almost (27-28) 30 students in each block. Yes, that is almost 30 hormonal boys and girls in a small portable classroom. Low on space, but trying to make it fun. I am trying to implement Daily 5/Cafe and some of the Whole Brain Teaching. I still have not become consistent with any of it. I am having a hard time finding Daily 5 time, because by the time I finish my 20 minute lesson, there just doesn't seem much time left. Well, maybe that is because we have had mandatory keyboarding the last 3 weeks and our schedule has been CRAZY!!!!

Then, there is the level of my students. Can we say all over the place? I have 3-4 brand new to the country English Language Learners, one who is needing to learn his colors, shapes, and sight words. We have 3-4 darlings who like to test us daily, and we have to watch out for bullying on a regular basis, and then there are the ones who are slightly below grade level, and the rest are right about average. Oh boy, differentiation, differentiation, differentiation. Keeps me on my toes, that is for sure.

Overall, it has been a pretty good start to the year. Most of the kids are respectful, at least to us teachers, and they seem to be working pretty hard. Plus, with progress reports going out this past week, I think the students have realized, that they are going to have to work for their grades, and thinking beyond the obvious is part of that.

So maybe some of my blogger friends can help me with ideas to incorporate Geography, Reading, and Writing. I would love to know of some books that I can use to teach Geography through Reading. Any ideas? Websites? Etc?

Well, till next time, and I hope it will be less that 5 weeks, Good luck with your endeavors and may each day be blessed with good things and happy times.
Make sure you check out what others are doing and join in on the fun. If it wasn't for this every week, I probably wouldn't be where I am at with all the things I need to do for my class, or be as organized as I will be this year.

I did mine a little different than the other ones I have seen. I used library pockets, and did it over 3 boards. I did this for a couple of reasons - 1) I live in portable land and with the humidity and wind or other elements when the door opens, there is no guarantee that the sticky notes will stay. 2) I have 3 classes through out the day, and if I don't have time to grab the slips from each class, I might not have enough space.

So I see myself using index cards (over multiple days), and them sliding their index cards in to the slot as they leave.
I got 15 more bags done, thanks to my amazing Mother who helped me accomplish this while she was here this weekend. Not sure what I would do without her.

So that means I have 12 green and 15 Red. Still have 18 Green, 15 Red, and 30 Blue to go. I had better work on a set a night if I want this finished, since I am back to school on MONDAY!!!! YIKES!!!
Then I pulled it out to show my mom this weekend the actual thing and when I went to unfold it, it was all stuck together. Even with a hair dryer to try and allow the glue to melt, this is what I ended up with.
Back in July I made a writing process line up so that my kids could mark where they were in the writing process. It looked like this.

Last night I took it out to show my Mom, who wanted to see my projects in person, and it was all stuck together. I had folded it to store it. So now it looks like this:

As you can see when they got pulled apart, my pages ripped. and I couldn't even get the top two apart.

I don't have a problem recreating this, but I would like to know how to prevent it from doing this again. Was Modge Podge the wrong thing to use? I will take any suggestions. I think I'll Link Up with Tara and Monday Made It today so that someone might get a few more suggestions.

Thanks all my bloggie friends.

I started off in Dallas at Mary Kay Sapphire Seminar. Oh, How much fun I had.
New Nail Colors!!! Dress made out of recycled Future National Mundy
boxes! Area (My Girlfriends).

I finished up in Dallas on Wednesday Morning and headed to Mardel's to get some laminating done (I had a 5 Feet Free coupon!). After doing that, repacking, and getting my carpets cleaned, I headed over to my sisters for another Stitching Weekend.

Thursday Morning - Beth (my sister), and I headed down to Red Rock, Texas to Hideaway Hills Bed and Breakfast. Oh my, what an amazing place. It holds a max of 10 people in bungalows. Has a separate great room, that they have set up for crafts. Yes, that means 10 large tables with rolling comfortable chairs and lights already provided. They have had quilters, scrappers, and stitchers all come. Not to mention each meal we had was to die for and the owners just became a part of our group. Oh how much fun.

My project here was a stitched sampler. This piece was started in March of 2009. It is being completed by My mom, my sister, and myself. Let me explain, we each started our own piece (yes all the same design), and then are rotating it around so we each have the same completed piece, that each of us stitched on.

Here is the piece I worked on, my mom's:

The before I started my section (My Mom stitched this part):

Here is what I got done while I was there (I stitched):

Sorry, I couldn't get it to turn, but you should be able to see what I added. The phrase so far on there is "With Silken Stitches Dost My Nee" (the last word will be needle).

We came back Sunday, and did I mention that while I drove my lovely sister cut out all 20 feet of laminated items for me. YEA, BETH!!! Then she asked if I had more laminating, and when I said yes, she said it is hers to cut out at night. So I finished the last 15 feet of Laminating I had today. Woo Hoo.

On to my school made its: Yes I did do some of those.

I completed my Vocabulary in Context Binder to add with my other 5 I have done.

In case you didn't read last weeks post, I have printed off hard copies of lessons and reading passages for each "topic" and for the grades 2-6 from www.readworks.org. With all the RTI and different levels I have in my 6th grade class', this allows me to have the information at my fingertips with out having to go web searching.

I also worked on creating book bags.

So, I know I could have bought actual book boxes, but when you need 90 (yes, 3 classes of 30), the next question is where to put them. I don't have room for all those boxes. Then I thought well I could just do canvas bags, okay on space, but that green thing called money, my budget just won't fit that. I tried using gallon baggies last year, but they broke, and some non-fiction books just wouldn't fit. So then with all the duck tape projects going around, I decided that maybe duck tape would fix the breaking problem(reinforce the edges and bottom). The I started thinking about size and remembered those baggies I saw a few years back with the school bus' on them. I couldn't find those, but Hefty had a 2.5 gallon Ziploc bag. I decided to go with those. 12 for $4 wasn't bad, big enough for most non-fiction or picture books, and I got duck tape when it was on sales at Michael's for 2 for 7. So I started off with one box of bags and tried it tonight. I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Now to find a storage idea, and see if they actually work. By the way, that is my son (Paul) who was helping me.

So after a busy week, then a busy Monday with my kids I got back from their Dad's, I decided I should like up with Tara for her Monday Made It.

I start back to school on the 20th, so not much more time and so much to do. Another :

13 Topic Binders
78 Book Bags
My Teacher Notebook - started but not finished
My Sub Notebook
Exit Ticket Poster
and classroom set up, I should stay pretty busy.

Till next Monday, Have fun linking up with Tara and seeing what others made.
I am posting this from my phone because I am in Dallas at Mary Kay Sapphire Seminar!!! Woo Hoo Party Time. Yes, that is right, on top of being a teacher, parent, and stitcher, I am an independent beauty consultant. Interested in skin care, body care, color cosmetics and more? Then check out my website at www.marykay.com/nrutledge and let me guide you to amazing things.

Okay, okay, I'm back on track now. Back to school stuff. Well, this is what I "made".
Well, rats!!! Can't figure out how to insert the image off my phone, I'll explain instead.

I have printed off over the past few weeks lesson passages and ideas from my district web site and www.readworks.org to create separate binders for the different concepts in reading (summary, main idea, inference, etc.). The binders are coming together slowly, but I'm still working on it.

Then there is the stuff I printed on card stock - Parts of the Daily 5, CAFE Headers and Strategies, Daily 5 bookmarks, Calendar Pieces, Affix Word Wall, figurative language posters, genre posters, and I think 1 other thing. Okay, I know not really a made it, but a heck of a lot of printing, and then at least an hour of cutting and trimming to get ready to laminate. Thank you Mardels for the coupon for 5 feet of free laminating. At least it will save some money (oh, and they accidentally gave me 2 :))!!! So as for later this week, I will be a laminating, cutting machine, because as you can tell, I only have a little laminating!!!!

Well - Ta Ta for now, post more about seminar later, and the another stitching weekend coming up, then I guess it is back to reality.

Tara, sorry but the only way I know how to put a link to the Monday made it site with my phone is this way - www.4thgradefrolic.blogspot.com. I'll try to rdmebed to grab your button on Wednesday when I'm back at home.

Well last week was crazy and I am so behind. Behind on Guiding Readers book study, Daily 5 Book Study, and now CAFE book study. I plan on catching up today between doctors appointments and other things, so today will be a multiple blog day (sorry).

I finally got the craft projects I wanted to get done on Thursday. My brain just wasn't in school last week, and it was probably due to all the divorce stuff I was handling (that's okay because I was ready for it to be done with).

Here is all what I completed thursday night while watching TV, and procrastinating on house work.

#1 - No Name Board -
There have been so many out there, so I can't tell you exactly where I got my inspiration, maybe a little from all. I kept mine simple. (sorry its the wrong direction)

# 2 - Table Tubs and Buckets
I got the tubs from the dollar store and the buckets from the dollar spot at Target. If you go looking for these and can't find the orange one, it is because I spray painted a silver one orange. The silver one (s - don't forget I painted one orange) had a chalkboard spot on them to write and I just put my labels over them. I created the labels on my computer and then went Modge Podge crazy (well at least for me).

I plan on the tubs holding community crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks, and maybe markers. As for the buckets, I am thinking one at each table each day for them to put their trash in and then empty at the end of class, just maybe this week keep little papers off the floor.

Again I know I have seen this in circle format somewhere on our Monday Made It's, but I am not sure who started it. I got the two rectangular trays from Dollar store and took some spray paint to them. The magnets are the clear class rocks from Michaels in the flower section with Modge Podged numbers that I created off my computer and magnets glued on.

#4 - Well I had extra of those clear rocks and decided I should make some more magnets from the stitching crew I am getting together with the first week of August. Back to the computer for some fun pictures and more Modge Podge. Hope they like them.
# 6- I need your help here. At my big stitch weekend a couple of weeks ago, the ladies gave us these medal siding things. They weren't a big hit, but I knew I should be able to use them in my classroom somehow. I ended up getting mine plus the 4 others from the people at my table (like I said, they weren't a hit). I spray painted them to match my buckets as a start (I know I am missing yellow, didn't have yellow spray paint at the time). I'm not sure what to do with them? I have thought of stacking them to show class volume, putting them on my table for the kids to request bathroom, etc, or maybe one on my table to show busy or free for when I am in small groups. I would love to have your ideas. Here is a picture so you know what I am talking about.

I got to attend a stitching retreat put on by The Silver Needle in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was able to join all of these women.

That would be 121 women representing 24 states and Canada. For Thursday and all of Friday till 5 we got to work on what every project we wanted. So there were lots of neat projects going on. During that time I was able to finish a piece I have been working on for months. (unfortunately during school, I don't get to stitch daily). Here is what I finished on Friday.

Friday evening the ladies at the Stitching Needle had the designers of Bent Creek Designs come and give us projects and teach us some new stitches. YEA!!

Here where the projects we received Friday:
Till next week. Happy Make It Monday. I can't wait to see who else posts things on Tara's Monday Made It. Link up and see what others have done and post yours as well.
Look for my Monday Made It to see what I did. Now on to chapter 7. All of what was said here really hit true to me. I love the lesson ideas as well. I think visualization is so hard for older kids because they didn't always do it when they had picture books because they used the pictures. One things I have done is read a picture book without showing the pictures and have them draw a scene. I also tell them to make a movie in their head. I also use pictures for inference. My favorite web site for that is www.bing.com. Sorry, I they started stitching class, so I am finishing this on Sunday night. If you have never been to bing.com, let me tell you why I love it for inference. #1 - there is a new picture every day, #2 - they are typically real world things (animals, places, people, events, etc), #3 - there are squares you can click on in the picture that will take you to links to tell you what it is. I think working with our higher grades, doesn't mean not teaching what they need, but instead teaching it in a way that allows the students to feel that they are being taught on level and not like a "baby."

Hope this helps some.
- Yes, start read to self on Day 1. Ibbeck1701 is correct, till you
have a good amount of time to pull students or a group, you go to a spot
and pretend to be busy. Trust me it all comes together.

For
those of you that are overwhelmed, hang on. When we start CAFE, it will
all make more sense and you can see how it all merges. I was
overwhelmed, frustrated, and panicky after I read D5 the first time
before I read CAFE. Once I read CAFE, it all came together.

As
for retelling the story - yes this is something the lower leveled
readers will do, and yes they do it by pictures, but a lot of times a
Non-Fiction Text can be read by pictures and gain information. We read
the captions for information, right? So I do teach all 3 ways to read a
book, because I want my students to know you can get the information
from more than just the words, especially in Non - Fiction Text.

Here
is a couple of video's the Two Sisters have done regarding Read to Self
and the "Barometer" Child (the one who tells you when to bring the
group back).

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/1960.cfm?sd=104

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/1747.cfm?sd=104

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/164.cfm?sd=33

and some links:

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/120.cfm

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/334.cfm

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/291.cfm

http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/1354.cfm

I
could just keep going. I just went to their website
(www.thedailycafe.com), and typed in Read to Self in the search area.
Then I looked for the public links. They also have member links. I
hope this helps some of you.
Read to Self is one
of my favorites. I time for kids to read on what they want to read, but
oh how it can be frustrating at times. I think I will just answer Mrs.
Klohns 5 questions today:

How do you launch or plan to launch the Read to Self component in your own classroom?

1. I always begin Read To Self the
way the book suggests. As a class (and each individual Class, I will
have 3 this year) we create the I chart. Yes that means 3 I charts in
one day. No I don't post them all, I combine to make 1 that gets
posted. As you can see the Sisters give you what should be on there, so
they all end up being about the same. Some years I add picture
visuals, some years not.

How do you implement modeling within your reading workshop time? Do
you always model, or do students model correct reading behaviors too?

2) I also do modeling with the kids. They
think it is funny, but it makes my point. Even though I teach 6th
grade, and a lot of my students have done this in the past, I still find
it very important. Each teacher is different. My versions of a bubble
space, silent, and appropriate seating spots may differ from the
previous teacher(s). I mainly have the kids model. As for time, I don't
always start with 3 minutes, but I never start with more than 5. Yes,
they are 6th graders, but we don't want wrong practice and believe me
there are years we don't make it past 3 minutes.

How do your students choose their spots of read to self in your classroom?

3. I let me
students choose their spots to sit, of course this is after we make an
anchor chart of where appropriate seats are. (Where I can see you, what
is a bubble space, where you will stay awake, yes you can be on the
floor, no more than 2 people at a table, etc)

Do you allow your students the opportunity to book shop during their
read to self time, or when do your students have an opportunity to do
this?

4. I prefer book
shopping to be done before Daily 5 starts, but with 3 classes and only
90 minutes each, a lot of time the book shopping has to be on the way to
their spot. I haven't figured out a good way to do this. I will take
any ideas that may be out there.

Is Read to Self something that you expect your students to do on a daily basis when they are picking their rotation spots?

5. I think Read to Self is a
DAILY must do. I am hoping to have a Daily 3, where Read to Self and
Work on Writing are required, and then Read to Someone, Listen to
Reading (don't do this very often), and Word Work as an optional the 3rd
rotation. However to be honest, even after doing this 3 years, it is
still hard to get it all in for me. I have also found that my Mini
Lessons some times are 20 minutes (hey with 6th grade sometimes it takes
that) and we can only do a Daily 2. I have also realized in order to
get those grades, we all must have, I have to help my students
understand that Read to Self may include an activity to do as well.
Sometimes we need to record as we read to completely comprehend.
I know I'm a day late, again! I promise to try to be on top of things a little more, however Chapter 7 will probably be late as well, I will be out of town from Thursday to Sunday.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This chapter really hit home with me in several ways -

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">1) This is where a lot of my students are. I teach a lot of ESL kids and while they can read fluently and with accuracy, their comprehension and vocabulary are weak.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">2) Hello, CAFE. Does this not connect so well. Our students have the A - accuracy and F- Fluency strategies and we have to work on the C - Comprehension and E - Expanding Vocabulary.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">3) I think I have figured out how to include this with Daily 5/ Cafe. I can so see myself teaching these strategies as a whole group the first few weeks of school while getting my Daily 5 set up, and then reinforcing these strategies in small groups with their Must Do's being their activities during Daily 5 Time. I think this might just work.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I also like how she includes the writing components and vocabulary components which fit right in with Work on Writing and Word Work.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Oh boy, I may be putting too much on myself trying to get all this to come together, but I love all my thoughts. Now how to include Geography, I'll figure it out.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The neat thing is, is Lori's strategies (lessons) during Small group match up and give you strategies for teaching the Comprehension elements and having a physical for grading.

I can't wait for the next chapter (Hey my color goofed), That's better. Working with Struggling Readers in the Upper Grades is where I am, so I can't wait for her new ideas. Has anyone thought of putting a spreadsheet together of her Lesson Routines, What they Are, and Her Must Do's along with what area of reader they go with? Stupid Auto Save, changed my font again. Maybe that will be my first TPT. Not sure if mine will look as cute as ya'lls. Till next time. Happy Reading.
It seems as I complete one project I get to add two more to my list. I have decided I am going to do two more fun projects and then on to things that help my students learn. I will be incorporating Reading, Writing, and Social Studies all in 90 minutes (YIKES!). I need to figure out how to make my Daily 5 work with Social Studies too. I have always struggled teaching vocabulary and spelling, so those are two things I think I will work on the next couple of weeks.

This weeks Monday Made It I got my inspiration from Alison at Eberopolis and her creation of the Writing Process. (Click on the picture to see how she did this.)

I did mine a little different for two reasons. # 1 - I wanted it to take up less space and #2 - I have 3 classes of up to 30 students each. That is a lot of clothespins.

Here are the clothespins - 30 of each color and I added plate joining biscuits (from the hardware store) so I could write the numbers bigger and hopefully see them from some distance.
I know that I probably can't fit 90 clothes pins on each board, but I got at least 60 done last night, and who has all the students on the same step in the process.

As for next week, I plan on having two fun teaching projects and a stitching project. I am going to a stitch camp from Thursday to Sunday, I can't wait. Well, the laundry needs to be done (YUCK) and the house needs to be cleaned (YUCK, YUCK) so I guess I better get that done so I can work on some more projects. Wish I could just blog hop instead and work on crafts.

I am so excited. I will be starting
my 4th year using daily 5. The first 2 years I used book boxes. I was
in 4th grade, the first year I was self contained and the 2nd I taught
only 2 classes, so it wasn't to difficult. Last year and this year I
will be in 6th grade. Last year I had 60 kids and this next year it
will be 90. Yikes, how to find a space for all those books. I try to
encourage my students to keep their library books with them and then I
have a library. I'm not sure what I will do this next year, but I will
keep thinking.

I also have a gathering spot. For some of my
larger students, I allow my students to sit in chairs but with in a
close proximity to my gathering space. I realized 1/2 through the year
last year that if I didn't bring the students to a gathering spot, I was
not having the engagement I needed in the class. A gathering place is
something I will continue.

Anchor charts are an interesting topic
when you have more than 1 class you are teaching. Last year I got to
play with a Promethean Board for the first time, and it was so much fun.
I really liked this for Daily 5 and my anchor charts. I created a
flip chart for each class and created our Anchor charts on the flip
chart. After all class' had created each I chart, I combined all
information on a piece of poster board to post in the room. This way
each class got to come up with their I chart, but their was also a
visual available at all times. I also like the idea of making copies
for the students to put into their reading journals.

As for the 3
minute time frame, I understand the thought of "they should be able to
do this." However, Last year I learned very quickly that my idea of how
Daily 5 looks and the teachers before me where very different. My
version of silent and theirs were different. My idea of a bubble space
and theirs were different. So starting out with the 3 minutes and
increasing time slowly. I realized this is important if I want my
expectations met.

As for signals there are a few I have done:
1 - I say "Alakazu" and the kids respond with "Alakazam" and put all eyes on me.
2 - I say 5 loudly and then count down on my hand till I hit zero and I should have all students on me.
3 - I have done the same thing as number 2, but using a bell
4 - I have had a student teacher use the McDonald's theme and the students respond with "I'm loving it."

I would recommend finding one or two and sticking with them.
Thank you Amanda at The Teaching Thief for having Fiction Friday, now I get to share.

Have you ever heard of Narrative Poetry? I hadn't until I came across this set of books in my closet in my new 6th Grade classroom and started reading the book. It was quite interesting how I came across it. My students and I had just finished reading "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbit, and they were dying to read another novel. So I went into my closet and started searching. My choices that the district recommends were Manic McGee, Esperanza Rising, and Home of the Brave. I started reading the previews of each and Home of the Brave caught me, because it was about a refugee from Africa who had come to America and his "adventure" as he adjusted. We were studying Africa, so it sounded like a perfect fit.

In this book, each chapter or section is written as a poem. Hummm, Poems, fiction, I can teach lots with this I thought.

What is the basis of this book, well it is about this boy, Kek, who lost his father and brother in Africa as a part of the war, and they can't find his mother. So he is sent to America as a refugee to live with his Aunt and his cousin. He has so much to learn. First of all he is traveling from Africa to Minnesota. He doesn't know much English and to top it off, the culture is completely different.

The first line in the first chapter is something like (hey my book is at school, I'm not, so I have to paraphrase), "The flying boat arrived back on Earth, and I looked out the round thing and saw white all over the ground." Flying Boat, Round thing, and white on the ground. What is he talking about? Hello figurative language (I can teach this too). He was talking about a Airplane, looking out the window, and seeing snow. That is the first of many confusions Kek has in terms of America and how things are so different.

I found that my students really liked this book, and even though it was at a 6th grade level, I could see any grade 4th and up doing it with guidance, and 3rd probably doing it as a read aloud with discussion.

I would recommend this to any teacher to read with their class. The understanding of people coming from other countries and what they have to face is unbelievable. Not to mention learning about culture from another country all at the same time.

Chapter 5 continues on the basics of Before, During, and After Reading strategies, but takes it up a level. These readers are transitioning from reading out loud to reading in their heads. Something I realize, is this may not just be young readers, in fact in my 6th Grade classroom I have some of these. They may be the students with learning disabilities, are a little behind, or my English Language Learners. This chapter also reminded me of some strategies I could use with my strugglers.

One thing that really hit me was having the student read the story through once, and then after the second read you start the comprehension part. Give them the opportunity to tackle those words, because during tackling you loose meaning of the text. Maybe I need to explain this to my students better. I'm not sure if everyone does this, but in Texas and our state exams we always tell the kids to read and reread before they answer the questions. It still amazes me at how many student refuse to do this. How many times when you are reading a professional or personal book do you go back and reread something to clarify. I know I do.

When Lori talks about "mini-Lessons" you can do with the groups and then the must do's that go along with it, I thought "oooooh - this is how I can fit this into Daily 5/CAFE and get grades". Those Must Do's are assessments, who says a rubric with those can't be a grade.

I am really enjoying refreshing my brain with this book. I can't wait for Chapter 6. Happy 4th to all and Happy Reading.
teaching last year. Last year was my first year in 6th grade, and
coming from 4th grade I had a lot of students that I had 2 years
earlier. I had these expectations that they would be able to jump into
Daily 5. They had done it in 5th grade as well. At the beginning I did
a lot of trust without really working on the procedures and
expectations and building the correct stamina. By the middle of the
year, I was frustrated, irritated, and not trusting at all. I realized
that my expectations in Daily 5 may not look like or sound like the
teacher previous. Community - well they have been together for years, I
shouldn't need to develop that (WRONG), I have realized that I must
rebuild that community in each class, teaching respect for one another.
Learning how to react before the big hormones start is definitely a must
in 6th grade.

So for next year I really have to build, build,
build the expectations and practice them before I let go, but also trust
that these students can be responsible enough to take ownership of
their learning. Heck isn't that what we want in the long run, students
to become life long learners? With that TRUST I have to give Choice
(ugh - this is hard, I'm not sure I like this), and stay out of the way.

I once had a cousin of mine who home schools say, you know I
get some much more done with my son when we study what he is interested
in. We have periods when he is really into reading, and he soars.
However, if I try to force reading on him when he doesn't want to read,
it is like beating down a brick wall.

Okay - I know we can't do
this, but if we allow the students to do the Daily 5 in their own order
then just maybe their sense of urgency will be their and their stamina
will be stronger. Just a thought. I can't wait to continue this book
study and ponder on more things I need to focus on a little better.
